Volunteer
Are you looking for a volunteer experience . . .
. . . where you make a difference?
. . . where you are a valued member of the team?
. . . where you can use your skills?
Then maybe Cardinal Services – this spirited, lively, and unexpected place is for you!
There is much to do and we would welcome you and the skills you could bring to our shared effort. Below are a few of the areas where your time and abilities could make a difference.
DIRECT SERVICES
Activities Room Helper: Assist Developmental Specialist in classroom activities like reading to the clients, directing craft projects, art projects and other activities that develop and maintain dexterity and hand-eye coordination
Bilingual Translator: Assist Spanish-speaking individuals in securing services by helping them fill out forms, make appointments, understand instructions, or simply communicate with their program worker.
Classroom Helper: Work with small children in the Early Head Start/Head Start programs, reading to them and helping them learn through play, helping with meal and nap time, teaching the children lessons of sharing and acceptance.
Read to Children: In the same classrooms as Classroom Helper, w/o other responsibilities, reading alone. This is a good job for someone with limited time to give.
Community Friend: Visit with a disabled individual on a regular basis. Perhaps once a week or month, go their home and share dinner with them, take them for an outing, rent a movie and order pizza—whatever you would do with a friend.
Tutor: Spend one hour per week tutoring a person with their reading skills.
INDIRECT SERVICES
Maintenance Support: Assist Maintenance Department with various cleanup, repair, renovation, and lawn jobs in and around Cardinal Services buildings.
General Office Support: Basic office support, including copying, filing, shredding, typing, specially assigned projects.
Tootsie Roll Fund Drive: One Friday/Saturday in May. Join a hundred other volunteers as we collect spare change for Cardinal Services’ First Steps Program. Stand on street corner/storefront collecting $ and hand out Tootsie Rolls. We made over $16,000 in 2008—the largest collection in the State!
Duck Race Fundraiser: July. Attend events and staff locations to sell duck “Adoptions” for the big race in July. If selling is not your bag, you can wear the Duck Costume! Or if you are a good organizer, perhaps you would be of help to the Race Committee. Great Fun—and raised more than $35,000 for Cardinal Programs in 2008!
Kids on the Block Puppets: Join our Muppet-like puppet team to perform for small children in after-school programs and elementary schools. Our puppets teach about disabilities and help children understand why another child may be different from themselves. No experience required. Training provided.
Computer Support: Assist the IT Department in cleaning up files and other computer maintenance.
